I’ve been reading some of Mark Strand’s poems lately.

I’ve come across his piece which I appreciate for both the economy and clarity of words. To me, this poem meets head on my own thoughts lately about movements, change, transition. It’s a piece that I have loved reading more than once and just tossing around in my head, perhaps with the hope that I could some come up with a new poem soon 🙂

Keeping Things Whole
by Mark Strand

In a field
I am the absence
of field.
This is
always the case.
Wherever I am
I am what is missing.
When I walk
I part the air
and always
the air moves in
to fill the spaces
where my body’s been.
We all have reasons
for moving.
I move
to keep things whole.
